Artist Danh Vo works primarily in collecting, recontextualizing, and displaying everyday objects to explore memory, identity, and history. I am interested in the personal, the familial, and the emotional aspects of his work, because they show how intimate experiences are connected to larger social and historical structures.

For my research this week, I focused on Oma Totem (2020), which deals with the subject of memory in a way that resonated with me. The sculpture is made from three household appliances— a television, a refrigerator, and a washing machine—stacked together. These were given to Vos grandmother when she immigrated to Denmark. I am particularly drawn to it, because it turns ordinary objects into powerful carriers of family memory and immigrant history.

I observed that the work contained elements of preservation, personal history, and displacement. For me, the stacked appliances evoked a connection to my own family’s old objects that have been kept for years, not because of their use, but because of the stories they hold. I noticed that by placing the appliances into a museum space, Vo shifted their meaning from private family relics to shared cultural memory.

In an interview with Artnet News, the artist commented that he is interested in how objects can carry more than themselves, embodying both history and emotion. In addition, a critic wrote that Oma Totem illustrates how memory is shaped not only by family bonds but also by social institutions. I am of the opinion that this double perspective makes the work especially powerful. This also reminds me of Lev Manovich’s idea of the database and the algorithm, because the objects function like “data entries” that can be rearranged to construct new narratives of identity and memory.

It got me thinking that, for my own work in the future, I could explore using personal belongings and family objects as material. By placing them into new contexts, I could transform them into carriers of memory and emotion, allowing private stories to be shared with others.
