Artist Jeffrey Shaw works primarily in interactive media and virtual environments. I am interested in the immersive, participatory, and spatial aspects of his work, because of how they challenge the traditional way we experience art and storytelling.

For my research this week, I focused on Extended Virtual Environment (EVE), which he made in 1993. This work deals with the subject of perception and control, in a way that resonated with me. I am particularly drawn to it because it allows the viewer to become part of the artwork, not just someone who watches from the outside.

I observed that the work contained a large inflatable dome, with stereoscopic projections controlled by a viewer wearing a head-mounted display. For me, this element evoked a connection to immersive cinema and virtual reality. I noticed this feature of the work made the viewer’s body movement part of the experience, which is very different from traditional film.

In an interview, Shaw commented that his goal was to“extend the language of cinema into new spatial and interactive dimensions. In addition, I found that media theorist Gene Youngblood described expanded cinema as a way to “transform the viewer’s consciousness”. I am of the opinion that EVE fits this idea well, because it gives the viewer agency to explore the virtual space.

This also reminds me of Lev Manovich’s idea of the database and the algorithm, because the viewer’s movement acts like an algorithm that selects what part of the virtual world to see.

It got me thinking that, for my own work in the future, I could explore how to use space and interaction to tell stories. Instead of making something that people just look at, I want to create something they can step into and shape with their own choices.
